Dr. George Rehm explains the water sampling and data collection system.

Discovery Farms Minnesota is a producer led effort to gather field-scale information on water quality impacts from a variety of farming systems in different settings across Minnesota. When combined with farm management and economic information, this evaluation will harness production and environmental science together to aid in the identification and implementation of appropriate management practices.

The mission of the program is to gather water quality information under real-world conditions, providing practical, credible, site-specific information to allow better water quality management decisions.  Ultimately, the improvement and protection of surface water quality can only be achieved when the relationships between land management and water quality are scientifically characterized and understood.

Discovery Farms Minnesota provides both information and forum to educate and improve communications among the agricultural community, consumers, researchers, and policy-makers to identify and implement effective management practices that are compatible with profitable agriculture.

Discovery Farms Minnesota was launched in the fall of 2009, with support and assistance from the 15 farm organizations comprising the Minnesota Agricultural Water Resources Coalition, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, and University of Minnesota Extension. Initial funding for Discovery Farms Minnesota was provided by the Minnesota Corn Growers and the Minnesota Soybean Growers.
